What is Rocket League?

Updated: Apr 23, 2022

Rocket League is a straightforward video game. Each match (1v1, 2v2, 3v3) is five minutes long, consisting of a ball, cars, and two nets. While simple, in theory, it is complicated to master.

The very popular eSport has averaged over 90 million players monthly since February of 2021 after it went free-to-play on September 23rd, 2020.

First Time Playing

Starting off playing, it is fun to drive around and try to hit the ball with friends, which sounds easier than it is. The controls and micro-movements of your car make Rocket League so challenging.

Controlling your car on the ground alone takes roughly 100 hours of in-game experience to understand fully. Your car's boost tank holds up to 100 boost, which you must learn to use sparingly. This is called boost management.

When jumping off the ground, your car has 1.5 seconds to perform what is called a "dodge," which flips your car in whichever way your joystick is facing.

Aerial car control is even more challenging. It takes players hundreds of hours of dedicated training to fully grasp how your car turns and spins in the air. You must manage your boost to maintain direction and accuracy.

The Rank System

Like many other video games, Rocket League ranks players based on their Match Making Rating (MMR). You gain or lose MMR when you win or lose matches. Every player starts with an MMR of zero, Bronze rank, and you work your way up. To reach the highest rank, you must go through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and finally reach an MMR of 1,865 or above in Standard 3v3, Supersonic Legend.

Working on your Basic Mechanics

With primary control of your car, you must learn to use your abilities to your advantage.

Hitting the ball with the front corners of your car allows for the most significant power. While good to be able to do consistently, it is not always the best choice for the situation.

Decision Making

This is the key to high-level Rocket League and professional play. You must be able to outplay your opponents and make decisions that best benefit your team. It doesn't matter how good an individual player you are. If you are a bad teammate, you will not succeed in this game.

Every situation in Rocket League can be played differently. Trial and error is the only way to figure out how to beat defenders.

What makes this game so hard?

  • It is all about the number of hours you put into the game.

  • The skill ceiling is continually being raised, and professional players continue to improve daily.

  • New mechanics are still being discovered and improved upon.

What does it take to compete professionally?

  • You have to think very quickly, accurately, and consistently.

  • Work and rotate around your teammates. They must be able to rely on you.

  • Be resilient. When you lose, it will happen thousands of times. There is always something to learn.

  • Be masterful in your mechanics and use them to beat your opponents.

  • Dedicate your life to the game. Every professional player has over 10,000 hours in the game.

Why you should play Rocket League

It is proven that playing video games improve:

  • Cognitive abilities.

  • Problem-solving skills and logic.

  • Hand-eye coordination.

  • Attention to detail.

They also allow improved multi-tasking ability, faster and more accurate decision-making, and enhanced prosocial behaviors. And it's fun!
